Prof. Yuhong He
Biography
Dr. Yuhong He is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment (GGE) at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). She received her PhD in Geography from the University of Saskatchewan (2008) and joined UTM in 2009. Her research employs remote sensing, machine learning and ecosystem modelling to study changes in natural (grasslands, forests, wetlands) and managed (farmland and urban) systems.
She brings together researchers from several disciplines and works with practitioners across sectors to understand how human activity and global change affect the environment, and to make natural and built environments healthier and more resilient.
With 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 140 conference presentations, Dr. He and her team have contributed substantially to remote sensing research, and her former students have gone on to remote sensing careers in academia, government and industry. Her awards include the Early Career Award from the AAG Remote Sensing Specialty Group (2011), an Ontario Early Researcher Award (2015), the E. A. Robinson Teaching Excellence Award at UTM (2017) and the Desmond Morton Research Excellence Award at UTM (2022–2023).
Dr. He is Editor-in-Chief of Geomatica and an Associate Editor of the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and of Remote Sensing. She was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing from 2016 to 2018, and has served on the editorial boards of the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Environmental Management and the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation.
Dr. He is Secretary of the Canadian Remote Sensing Society (CRSS), where she was previously a Director and chaired its Award Committee. She was Director of the AAG Remote Sensing Specialty Group (2012–2014), and at UTM she has served as Department Chair (2018–2023), Associate Chair, Academic (2017–2018) and GIS program advisor.
She collaborates with local conservation authorities, including Credit Valley Conservation and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority; federal agencies, including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Natural Resources Canada; and industry partners, including the Ontario Aggregate Resources Corporation and Hydro One.
